john Dalton
Dalton was born in 1766 in Cumberland, England. He grew up in a poor family and wanted a formal education since a very young age. Later Dalton became a teacher where he went to schooling. Dalton then taught mathematics and natural philosophy at New College in Manchester. The first paper he publisized was about Daltonism, a colorblindness of the red-green type which is named after John Dalton since he and his brother were the first recognized account of this type. John Dalton wrote many books on various subjects. He wrote all his theories on atomic weights and structures in his book New Systems of Chemical Philosophy.
contribution to ATOMIC THEORY
|
Theory: All matter is made up of atoms. All atoms in an element are identical but atoms from different elements vary in size and mass.
Dalton was the first scientist to learn and explain atoms' behaviors by measuring atomic weights. He also discovered that atoms can not be created or destroyed. John Dalton was the first to prove that atoms of different elements could be identified by using atomic weights. Dalton created the first chart of atomic weights. |
EXPERIMENTS AND ATOMIC MODEL |
Dalton calculated atomic weights from percentage compositions of various compounds. He used arbitrary system to determine the element's atomic structure. In the experiment he learned that two combined element's combinations will occur in a certain sequence. He wrote about his experiments that proved atoms combine in simple ratios constantly.
